Role-Play is a tried and
tested tool and format that gets results in training and development.
Whatever your aims might be at the outset of a Training session,
role-play often exceeds expectations and highlights problems and
potential in a more relaxed, informal fashion allowing you to
assess performance, pre-empt problems and eradicate mistakes in
a safe, supportive and stimulating environment.
What is Role-Play…?
….. In simple terms, the use of actors or delegates to
act as a Client, Employer/ee, Consultant or whatever so that candidates
can be assessed or trained through practical exercises.
Why Role-Play…?
…… Candidates can demonstrate their skill level
in areas such as resilience, persuasiveness and confidence as
well as appropriate level of knowledge. Assessors can test for
competencies which can help establish the right person for a job
or promotion and trainers can give feedback based on what they
have observed.
Why use Professional Actors…?
There may be the temptation to do Role-Play in house. From experience
Just Desserts & Murderetc have found that the main disadvantage
of this is that the familiarity with one another undermines the
credibility of the process. Delegates may collude to the detriment
of the exercise.
The main positives of using Professional Actors are…..
- Being unknown to the delegate or candidate, the Professional
Actor is able to bring a sense of realism to the training session
which helps the candidate to take the exercise seriously.
- The actor can bring a degree of professionalism, consistency
and commitment to a character and can realistically convey emotions
essential in particular scenarios.
- More importantly the professional actor can offer objective
and constructive feedback on a delegate’s performance.
Is Role-Play suitable for you and your company….?
As with our murder mysteries and themed events Role-Play is
easily adapted to fit your needs and can fit a broad range of
training courses including:
- Customer Care & Services
- Health & Safety
- Sales and Advisory
- Recruitment and Interviewing Skills
- Coaching Skills
- Management & Staff Development
- Bullying in the Workplace
- Legal & Professional Consultancy
By using role-play training staff can develop skills in a safe
environment where mistakes can be made without fear of penalties
and can help management develop communication skills as well as
problem solving and highlighting new ways to tackle problems.
Just Desserts & Murderetc Actors – What
have they got to offer…?
In addition to being highly trained performers all our actors
are skilled in a variety of areas. Most are trained to degree
level and have worked in many business environments dealing with
customers and clients at all levels. They can bring to your training
session…….
- Credibility: Highly skilled improvisers
our role-players can maintain characters, emotions and attitudes
and can take on many different characters in the same training
session.
- Consistency: The role-players will
be consistent when seeing a number of candidates. This enables
you to assess accurately the specific competencies and performances
of each candidate.
- Flexibility: Our actors have the
ability to behave in whatever way is useful to you, e.g. arrogant,
withdrawn, complaining, challenging, high-powered or bullying.
- Memory: Our actors are accomplished
at memorizing instructions, assimilating facts, following instructions
and adhering to the requirements of your scenarios.
- Feedback: Our actors are good listeners
and talented at observing behavior, reacting accordingly and
are able to offer objective feedback, verbally or in writing.
- Business Backgrounds: As mentioned
above, all our actors have worked in various business environments
including, teaching, sales, finance, law, medical, insurance
and hospitality.
- Scripted Role-Play: A number of
clients have asked for scripted role-play which is a more structured
format but is as flexible as improvised role-play. The main
benefit of scripted is that it can be used to a higher level
of accuracy when assessing candidates.
